In memory of Barry Yates

By Alex Burgess

7 Bridges Walk for Paba!

The family, Suse & Mark, Lizey, Tommy, Akis and their partners, are all walking the 7 Bridges Walk this Sunday (28km!!) to raise funds for Cancer Council and research.

In memory of our beloved Paba, Barry, Bazza, Baz, Boogle Baz, Horrible, Buggaluggs and Dad, we invite you to support the Cancer Council to support those affected by cancer and fund life changing research.

After a seven year battle with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma, and a recurrence of Prostate Cancer, Paba passed away on the 29th of September, 2025. Paba will be remembered for his strength, bravery, determination and stoicism in his fight against cancer.

Paba is missed dearly by his loving daughters, Susan & Catherine, his three grandchildren, Lizey, Akis & Tommy; his son-in-law, Marky Wally; and above all, his beautiful wife of 65-years, Gigi.

Thank you to my supporters

The world was brighter with Barry in it. The love he showed for his family and his grandkids is something I'll forever admire. I'll always remember him in a party shirt, sipping a fine wine and cracking a joke.

The other day I was looking through photos and came across one of Barry and my stepdad Ronnie, from the 1980s - and it made me smile. Barry/Paba always reminded me of Ronnie, a very cheeky, happy, smart, kind person. To read Alex's post today, I teared up. Another legend has shuffled off this mortal coil. Paba was a lovely bloke, and he always made people smile or laugh. As a young schoolkid, I remember coming to the Yates' Place for parties and sleepovers, and Paba and Gigi always made me feel welcome. When I was older and going through some challenging times, I remember coming to Christmas at Balgowlah Hts and being welcomed again with open arms. Barry was the life of the party :) Barry will be missed and my thoughts are with Gigi and your close-knit family. I'm sure Paba is smiling down on you all xxx

Difficult to put into words what a wonderful human being Barry Yates was: not just a devoted husband, father & grandfather but Barry was a friend to many who always enjoyed lively conversations, banter and good humour whilst keenly interested in your well being. Vale Barry Yates … one of life’s great characters !!
